Artist Statement
I have been working with silver for 35 years, designing and making tableware including everything from teaspoons to tea sets. During this time my work has evolved but silver remains the common thread. Silver allows me the flexibility to create new designs by virtue of its many qualities including the adaptability of the material itself, its aesthetics and its relationship to cultural and religious traditions.
All my pieces are totally handmade from silver sheet and wire to the final polished form. This ensures that no two pieces are exactly the same even when I reproduce a design, though many of my designs are one offs. Functional design and quality craftsmanship are integral to my work. Silver lasts forever and so it is important that the design and making of my pieces have a timeless quality.
Apart from working with silver, I also make larger objects such as small sculptures, containers and vases in copper and stainless steel. These materials allow me to experiment with new forms that often give me further inspiration for new directions in my silver practice.
Some of my recent work is inspired by the landscape and traditional Aboriginal paintings that I saw while travelling in Central Australia. Though not literally interpreted, these images are subtly represented in the overall character of the pieces.
